Cress is the third book in The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. The fourth and final book, Winter, comes out in November (not-so-patiently waiting!) and earlier this year, we got a “bonus” book in the form of a prequel called Fairest.
Which one? There are so many different storylines in this book, all weaved together. They’re all part of the same story, but I love that we get to explore so many different characters. Most times, you have one or two main characters that you get to experience, but in this series, we have many and they’re all complicated and have their own back stories and conflicts. But no matter who’s POV we’re in, all parts of the story move the main plot further along. It all comes together perfectly at the end and sets up the next book to be even more amazing.
I was nervous when I first read the description for the second book in the series, Scarlet, and saw that the main characters was not Cinder. I immediately texted a friend who had read all three to confirm—Cinder was not going anywhere and she was in Scarlet and Cress plenty. Though, I will say, with every book we get new characters, and I have loved them all. Cress was no exception. And there is still plenty of Cinder, Thorne, Scarlet, Wolf, and the rest of the crew to keep you happy.
In many cases when you have a series, the books will sag a bit toward the end or in the middle. In the case of this series, however, they keep getting better! Cinder, while I enjoyed it very much, is actually now my least favorite book in the series (though not by much). With each book, the story gets deeper and more complex, we have new characters to love, and the world expands. If we keep going at this rate, Winter should be amazing!
Didn’t want to put it down. So much tension and suspense. So much to love! I really hope that these books get made into movies at some point, because the world of The Lunar Chronicles as I picture it is awesome, and I think they’d look great on the big screen. Plus, I like robot movies that don’t creep me out and make me scared that my computer might turn sentient and come after me. Yeah. Good robots and cyborgs, please!
The Goodreads Description
In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.
Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who’s only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.
